TV Soap Stars Take On Cumbria Lifesavers In Charity Football Match

By Kelly Eve

Stars of sport and screen took to the football pitch to raise funds for Cumbria’s air ambulance yesterday.

A crowd of more than 1,000 spectators flocked to the Copeland Stadium in Whitehaven to see actors from Channel 4’s Shameless, Hollyoaks and ITV’s Coronation Street.

They were competing against a select XI made up of lifesavers who work for Cumbria’s emergency services including firefighters, police officers, lifeboat volunteers and mountain rescue teams.

European boxing champ Craig Watson, who holds the light middleweight belt, scored the winning penalty in a 6-5 shoot-out at the end of the 4-4 match.

The Pride of Cumbria, run by the Great North Air Ambulance Service, did a fly past over the stadium shortly before the match kicked off at 3pm.

The fundraiser also involved celebrities such as actors Ciaran Griffiths and Nick Evans, who play hapless brothers Mickey and Shane Maguire in Shameless.

Waterloo Road actors Jack McMullen (Finn Sharkey), Dean Smith (Phillip Ryan), Tachia Newall (Bolton Smilie) and William Ash (deputy head Christopher Mead) joined the celebrity XI alongside Johnny Dixon (Darryl Morton from Coronation Street), Emmerdale duo Luke Tittensor, who played Daz Eden, and Danny Miller (Aaron Livesy); and Jamie Morgan from Hollyoaks.

The event was held to raise money for the air ambulance in the wake of the Keswick bus crash in May and the west Cumbrian shootings days later, two major incidents in which the helicopter, which relies on donations, was used.

Yesterday’s extravaganza was organised by Andy Sloan, who works at the Sellafield nuclear plant.

He said: “We don’t know how much we’ve raised, we think it’s a shed load of money, but we’ve been so busy and not had a chance to count it up yet.

“It’s been a beautiful day, with so many people and good weather.”

He added: “Ciaran was due to come down and open Hensingham Rocks, the festival I do in May, but he couldn’t because of filming commitments.

“Then the bus crash happened and then the shootings and my friend Paul Griffiths in Manchester, who I know Ciaran through, said they all wanted to come up and do something like a match. Paul put the team together.

“David Edgar, from the fire service; Mike Rogerson, from the police, and Tony Sewell, who is a fireman at Sellafield, helped put the combined emergency services team together.”

Jan Hawkins, for the Great North Air Ambulance Service, also had a stall at yesterday’s event.

Andy also paid tribute to Carlisle businessman Fred Story, whose eleventh-hour help ensured the event went ahead as planned.

Andy said: “There was a problem with our generator and we were still looking around late on Friday night and into the early hours of Saturday morning to get one when Fred stepped in and saved the day.

“We couldn’t have done it without one.”

Yesterday’s match was sponsored by Flimby firm Forth Engineering.

Family fun activities included Zumba, children’s games and The Twoers, performing in the bar in a post-match party.
